149 - Winton to Cloncurry

We will start this posting off with Winton. This is our third visit to Winton, so we stayed at a new CP that belongs to the Tattersalls Hotel. Last time we were there, we noticed this small park coming together opposite the Tattersalls Hotel. As we know the owner of the hotel, previously the bar manager from the Eimeo hotel in Mackay in the eighties...Paul Nielson...., who now owns the Tattersalls Pub, and has developed the CP. Every time we go through Winton, we say gidday and have a drink. I am sure one of our followers FrankeeG would know him as well, from both our time in Mackay NQ.

We had a couple of nights there in the CP. We didn't do the Matilda Centre (been there done that ) musical fence (been there done that) Truck Museum (don't like museums) nor did we do the dinosaur thingy. We did however take some photos of the crazy who cements all things great and small into his fence....mmmmm.

Any body lost a motor bike lately?

If you have lost something in Winton this where you look!

About the best pub in Winton owned and run by Paul Nielson

The Tattersalls has a good clientele and atmosphere

Need a hair cut Mister

After leaving Winton we decided to push onto Cloncurry....another long haul. At this stage starting to doubt whether we should go to Darwin after all, as at this point, we are not even half way there, and we are both exhausted. Also one couple (Peter and Geraldine) of the three other couples we were to meet up with en route to Darwin have had to turn around in Emerald and limp back to Bribie Island due to a medical problem, and one of the remaining two (Alan & Helen) have got a few family issues in Brisvegas. However the remaining couple (Barry & Gael) from Adelaide are still on track.

Cloncurry doesn't do mch for me, however the last time we were there, we stayed at the Top Tourist Park .....and was a great place. At Kyuna at one of our fuel stops we got talking to a couple, Doug, Jo and Baue the terrier. They told us where they were staying in Cloncurry, which happened to be the same park we stayed at last time we were there. Sounds good to me, so we rang ahead and booked in.

On our arrival the shock set in. We now have learnt that Discovery Parks, have taken over most of the Top Tourist chain, hence the private ownership is now gone and the park is no where near the pristine park that it was.

In actual fact, the park has been carved up to accommodate mining accommodation at the expense of van sites. I can see the logic behind it of course.....much better revenue from miners accommodation than us Geriatric Gypsies. I honestly feel the mining boom in Queensland will see the death knell of all the tourist parks as we know it.

Short back and sides mister

Doug, Jo and the Bride at Cloncurry

We had a couple of fun days with Doug and Jo. However after three nights it was time to move on and head towards Darwin, and Doug and Jo were heading to Townsville, then onto Cairns, before heading to Darwin some time in July.

As we kissed cuddled and cried it was back into the Val to venture forth, albeit with the feeling of doubt to continue. It is only about a kay or so outside Cloncurry we can turn up hill via Normaton and head back to Cairns....do we or don't we!!!!!!!!

Stay toooooooned

Gday Paul, almost missed your latest post as it has the same number -148-as the previous post. Yeah when I saw the name Paul Nielson I thought it sounded familiar. Have not been to Winton...at all but have been to the Curry about 8 years ago and stayed in the cvan park on the edge of town...townsville side. Is that the one you stayed at??
First visit to the Curry was way back in the late 80's and we stopped at the pub for a beer then a flash flood came through the old weir crossing. The town was in decline with most shops closed. Next two visits were the same with the town in further decline. When we last visited about 2004 the town was booming with a new motel and restaurant doing a roaring business.

Gidday Frank

The mining is saving "the curry". Without that the town would be dead.

I will fix up the numbers, seems that Google have changed the format with blogs, and have been having all sorts of issues posting.

We are in Darwin, now time to have a look around.

Cheers
